This next tip is for those teachers with advanced English language learners, GED, or college transition students. The following tools help students learn the vocabulary they find in the context of an academic text. Thanks to Rebecca Fernandez for introducing me to this site.
Tech skills: copying, pasting, submitting web forms, and printing
Although the website is outdated, the Academic Word List (AWL) Highlighter still works well and will identify core academic vocabulary in a text, using the Academic Word List. When a reading or other text is pasted into the box and submitted by the teacher, the tool bolds those words from the Academic Word List. This enables you to identify them easily so you can be sure to review these words with your class.

With the AWL Gapmaker, once you submit text, a webpage is created and a cloze activity/gap activity is automatically created for print out.
Lesson Idea:
I won’t write out the procedures for using these tools in the class here because the site does an excellent job of laying out the steps but you can see my screencast here.
Have you used this site before? What other lesson ideas or comments do you have?
